Philosophy of Teaching
When it comes to teaching voice, the skills and training you teach to a student will influence and impact the student’s life in many unexpected ways. The most valuable aspect to teaching voice is gaining my students trust and respect. Having my students believe that as their teacher, I will be supportive and genially interested in what is best for that students needs. When I first meet a student, I always ask them what is their goals in singing and would like to gain from taking lessons. Having a mutual understanding of what both the student and I the teacher is expecting will help provide for an open communication. In any relationship, communication is the key to creating understanding. A part of gaining mutual understanding and respect from one another is reliability. When both the singer and teacher arrive for a lesson, there should be a consistency and commitment that is expected. This shows the commitment on both the student’s part and myself in our lessons.
As a teacher, it is really imperative to show students that I am truly dedicated to them and their particular needs. When introducing new ideas and techniques, it is very important that they understand and feel open about trying new foreign concepts. I believe in teaching a more traditional technique using the concepts of Manuel Garcia. When teaching my students, I focus a lot on breathing and teaching the essentials of breathing for singing. I give students breathing exercises in order to prepare them for the process of inhalation, suspension and release. Making a student aware of what is needed in order to produce and maintain a musical sound. Another necessary tool for a student to learn is making them aware of how their body functions and what is the most ideal state for their bodies to function best. Teaching the importance of posture and how essential it is for singing will not only make a performer more confident in their singing, but their bodies will function at its best. Establishing good habits in your students will lead to better singing. As for the body, I train students to keep their feet slightly a part and to stand with relaxation of effort while remaining conscious of what it is taking place through out their body and to not create any excess tension.
Although a student must always be aware of their body, when teaching them to sing, I try to guide my students by demonstrating new ideas and having them be able to feel and hear the different resonance sensations throughout their bodies. In doing so, a student learns one of the most critical tools in helping them grow as a performer. We as performers cannot examine what is taking place in our bodies but becoming more aware of our breath, posture and resonance sensations can help guide us into the right direction.
Being a teacher and a performer is a continuous growing process. Everyday I learn something new and incorporate that into how I teach. It’s very vital to maintain a constant communication between my student and I so I learn how effective I am being. I constantly ask my students if they understand or have any questions of what was taught to them throughout the lessons. Also, at the end of every lesson, I review what was taught and what my student must prepare for our next lesson. As for myself the teacher, I look and listen for improvement from my students at the end of every lesson. Being able to evaluate and measure how far a student has progressed throughout lessons is very important for as teaching and watching my effectiveness. As a performer, I am able to constantly teach new ideas to students and have them relate to me not only as a teacher. Watching a student grow and develop their musical skills under your training, is one of the most exciting and rewarding experiences a teacher and performer can experience.
